Maine is the state that encompasses the northeastern most part of the United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Canada, and the state of New Hampshire. Maine, which was a part of Massachusetts until the early 19th century, was fought over between the British and American Patriot forces during the Revolutionary War. The University of Maine was established in 1865 and is a public research university located in Orono, Maine. Home to one of the country’s oldest Honors programs and one of the best libraries in the country, UMaine’s campus sits on the Stillwater River, and is home to more than 11,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Part of the University of Maine public university system, the University of Maine at Augusta is located in Maine’s capital city of Augusta. UMA also has a smaller 160-acre campus in Bangor, Maine. The university’s informal motto is “Stay Close, Go Far.” UMA serves about 5,000 students and is the third largest university in the state’s public university system. University of Southern Maine

The University of Southern Maine is an urban public university that is part of the University of Main public university system, with main campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston. 115 graduate and undergraduate majors and minors are available to USM’s 10,000 students. The University of New England is a higher-education trade school in Maine, with its main campus located in Biddeford, and a smaller one in Portland.
