Scholarships for Single Parents

As a single parent, you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. It can be hard to make ends meet, and single parents often have to work more than one job in this economy to cover the salary they are losing out on by not having a partner. Many single parents want to go back to school to get a better job and career to make a better life for their family, but worry they will not be able to do so. Luckily, there are a ton of scholarships for single parents that you can get. These scholarships are either national in scope or based out of a particular state or institution. State Scholarships


Alaska has a school scholarship for single mothers who attend the University of Alaska Tanana Valley Campus. If you have good grades, and are in good academic standing, you can receive funding to help with your vocational degree. Look up the Ruth Lister Scholarship for more information.


Arizona has an employee scholarship through its Coconino Community College Campus. If you are a single parent and you are attending Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, then you may be eligible. Even though this is called an employee scholarship, applicants do not have to be employees.


One of the more well-known scholarships for single parents is the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund. Depending on what county you live in, you may be able to apply for one of these awards. You must live in Arkansas and in the county you are applying to be eligible. The great thing about this scholarship is it is not restricted to just tuition. Books, utility costs, car maintenance and childcare are all eligible expenses.


The Bobbie Browning Memorial Scholarship is through California State University at Fullerton. Scholarships for single parents are available in the amount of $1,000 to reentry students under the age of 27 who attend school full-time.


This state has a couple of scholarships for single parents. The George Snow Scholarship Fund is for students who can demonstrate need and live in North Broward County or Palm Beach County. The other scholarship is the State College of Florida’s Wayne Gulbrandsen Academic Scholarship for Single Parents. This awards $400 to eligible single parents.


Single parents who reside in District 502 may be eligible for the College of DuPage Foundation Single Parent Scholarship. If you can show financial need and keep up a 2.0 GPA, then this scholarship may be for you.


Kirkwood Community College is well-known in the community for their support of single parents. They have several scholarships for single parents that you can apply for online.


Coplan Donohue Single Parent Scholarship is open to students of Minnesota State University. If you are a full-time student you may be eligible for this $2,000 prize.

New Hampshire

This small state has what is called a Cap and Gown Book Scholarship in the amount of $400 for books if you are a single parent attending Antioch University.

New Mexico

Sabrina Single Mothers Scholarship is a scholarship for single mothers who attend the University of New Mexico and can show a financial need for the scholarship.


Better a Life is scholarships for single parents that benefit first-time students at any of Oregon’s public universities. If you had a GPA of 3.0 or a score over 2650 on the GED Exam, then you may be eligible.


Collin College has a scholarship entitled, The Essary Family Single Parent Scholarship. If you are a single parent and you attend Collin College, then you can go online or call (972) 599-3145 to find out more.


Brigham Young University, or BYU, is known for their conservative stance on many topics. However, if you are a single parent and you attend the Marriot School of Management after taking a break of over three years, then you are eligible.


One of Washington’s community colleges, the Green River Community College, has scholarships for single parents that can demonstrate need.


The University of Wisconsin has several campuses, and both their Eau Claire and Madison campuses have scholarships for single parents. Awards range between $500 to $3,000 for students who can demonstrate financial need and also show good financial standing.
