North Carolina

North Carolina is a state in the southeastern United States. It is the 10th most populous state in the nation, with much of its population residing in Raleigh and Charlotte, the capital and largest city respectively. Europeans made set foot in what is now North Carolina as early as the 16th century, when Spanish colonists built Fort San Juan. This first European settlement was overtaken by local Native Americans, and years later North Carolina would become one of the Thirteen English Colonies. North Carolina is an involved and important part of America’s history, including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Today, North Carolinians, who sometimes refer to themselves as Tar Heels, are working hard to achieve great things in the economy, technology, and in education.
